May 15,2013

On Friday, May 17th, 2013, at 1pm, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office will host another Jail Management Training Academy graduation. The graduation will take place in the Erie County Community College, City Campus Auditorium located at 121 Ellicott Street. This is the second of three correctional training graduations that will take place this year. Mr. Terry Moran, New York State Commission of Correction’s Capital West Supervisor, will be the guest speaker at this ceremony.

A combination of thirty <30> deputy sheriffs and correction officers were hired on April 1st, 2013, to comply with the second phase of the Commission of Correction staffing agreement to fill vacant positions. The graduating officers will be sworn in and receive their oath of office from Sheriff Timothy B. Howard. They will subsequently begin their five week field training on the housing units inside the Erie County Holding Center and Alden Correctional Facility.

The third correctional training academy of 2013 is schedule to start September 9th. The Sheriff’s Office is currently attempting to recruit certified lateral transfer candidates throughout New York State to fill as many vacancies possible before the September academy. So far this year, the Jail Management Division has lost a total of twenty <20> jail officers to retirement or resignation.  This number is expected to increase before the start of the next academy.

The first jail management academy class of 2013 graduated on March 8th and they are now working at the Holding Center and Alden Correctional Facility.

The media is invited to attend this graduation. Sheriff Timothy B. Howard and Superintendent Tom Diina will be available for questions and comments.

"I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the citizens of Erie County for your support! Together, we will continue to make a our community a safer and better place to live."
