The Erie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a personal watercraft capsized in Lake Erie near the break wall to the outer harbor with two occupants in the water at approximately 2:00 pm today’s date.

Sheriff’s Marine Unit arrived on location to find a female with a leg injury on the break wall signaling for help while a male was climbing out of the dangerous water onto the break wall.  Deputies were able to safely board the two individuals on the Sheriff’s boat and transport them to the Small Boat Harbor where they were evaluated by the Buffalo Fire Department and Rural Metro Ambulance.

The operator, Justin Sumbrum and passenger Courtney Moffett both of Buffalo were ejected from their jet ski after striking a large wave. Courtney was able to swim back the jet ski and climb on but was subsequently pushed into the break wall while Justin was still swimming back to the break wall.  The jet ski was a total loss and was not recovered due to the dangerous waters.

The Buffalo Police Dive Team and the US Coast Guard were also on scene.

Authority:  Sgt. Rick Lauricella
